Close up of 'lnwrhiaj705' showing on the left the
replacement LNWR signal cabin and the two turnouts to the Whitacre branch. The
Ordnance Survey map seen in image 'lnwrhiaj2991' shows that the singled branch
line forked on the approach to the station with the up and down lines passing
either side of the goods shed. The line away from the photographer would have
been described by the Midland Railway as the down line from Whitacre when the
island interchange platform existed. This is because the Midland Railway
description of their traffic was orientated around their headquarters at Derby.
Traffic travelling towards Derby was described as being in the 'up' direction
whilst traffic moving away was described as being in the 'down' direction. The
LNWR, as with most other railway companies with their lines headquartered in
London, however described their traffic based on travelling 'up' to London and
'down' from London.
