An artist's impression of Hampton station showing the B&DJR building on the right with the L&BR lines to Birmingham on the left

An artist's impression of Hampton station showing the B&DJR building on the right with the L&BR lines to Birmingham on the left. The drawing is clearly impressionistic as the central island platform is much narrower than seen in later photographs. However whilst some details might be omitted, for instance there is no connection from the L&BR to the B&DJR, it is probable that detail shown was in existence. The bell on the platform provides an indication that early announcements to passengers were preceded by a hand bell being rung rather than the whistle later adopted. The shubs growing up the entrance to the station building appears to be partially covering the Derby Junction sign seen in image 'lnwrhiaj707c' yet there is no evidence of a station nameboard on the platform as seen image 'lnwrhiaj1560'. Above the window the clock seen in the same image is evident as is the station platform fencing. The items standing on the middle platform are hard to discern although the nearest item appears to be a bag with handles. The signal in the distance would appear to be of the type set by railway policemen or 'bobbies' as they were known, the precursor to the modern day signalman and prior to the introduction of signal boxes.
