LMS Route: Rugby to Wolverhampton
Hampton in Arden Station: lnwrhia1288
View of both the station building located at road level,
which housed the booking office, and the goods yard access road which ran
alongside. The lorry is travelling in the direction of Meridem whilst the road
sign pointing to the left indicates the road to the original Hampton in Arden
station known as 'Derby Junction'. The
station building at road level was described by Preston Hendry and his son,
Powell Hendry in their book 'LMS Stations' as being mock medieval with
architectural features common with the Early English Gothic period
(1200-1300).
In this 1930s view the roof over the door cantilivers to
beyond the kerb which might indicate the reason why this roof was later cut
back as seen in image 'lnwrhia687'. Another
notable change is the wall on top of the bridge between the station building
and the building, with the John Player advert, that provided the entrance to
the up platform's staircase. As can be seen in image 'lnwrhia1289' this wall originally formed one side of
the original passenger footbridge.
