Close up of the 1864 plan showing the original Banbury Street cattle sidings and Curzon Street's main warehouse

Close up of image 'lnwrcs2165' showing the 1864 plan with the original Banbury Street cattle sidings and Curzon Street's main warehouse. The plan shows that the housing and other buildings erected to the right of Hardwick's building have been demolished. The coat of purchasing these properties in 1837 had prevented the L & B from building Hardwick's grand symmetrical entrance of ornate columns and gates either side of his building. The hotel that was created by both Hardwick's building and the 1840 extension were converted to offices. The natural slope of the site, with the lower ground being to the right of the site, allowed cellars to be built which were used by various manufacturers of beer and spirits to store their goods without paying Customs the relevant taxes. Only when the goods were removed for delivery would the company become liable. At the top of the map, alongside the main line from London to New Street, are the cattle pens of Banbury Street cattle sidings. The erection of the Excursion station on this part of the site compelled the LNWR to move the cattle sidings to the other side of the main line.
