Close up of image 'lnwrcov645' showing an early L&B
four-wheels coach still fitted with luggage retaining supports fitted to the
roof. The carriage of luggage in the early days of railways again evolved from
the previous era of transport when over a thousand Turnpike companies
maintained some 20,000 miles of road enabling all the major cities to be
connected by stagecoach. With such small vehicles, luggage could only be stored
on top of the coach and as early railway coaches were effectively three or four
road coach bodies joined together and mounted to run on rails, this design was
carried forward.
