Close up of the main part of Coventry Station's second up platform showing the multitude of advertsing posters and details of the train shed

This close up of image 'lnwr620' shows the main part of Coventry Station's second up platform showing the multitude of advertising posters and details of the train shed. The platform roof is laid to a slight fall and is covered with lead sheeting all supported by hollow cast iron pillars. The platform height whilst higher than the 1838 station is lower than that adopted by the turn of the century. This reflects the origin of the railway's rolling stock being a development of stage coaches where passengers were expected to access the coach from ground level. The end column shows the two signal arms referred to in image 'lnwr620a'. It is believed that these signals were originally a mechanical hand-operated alternative to railway policemen holding out signalling flags. Pivoted in the centre of the arm they would control the two up lines including the up platform. They are currently placed at danger and will only be moved to the "off" position (vertically) when the train departing from the up platform, or passing directly through the station without stopping, had reached their appointed time to depart or pass through.
