Looking along the private road towards Warwick Road and the original 1838 station with the parcel office on the left. For many years up to the middle 1880s this was the only access to the station until Eaton Road was built. The boundary wall on the right also constituted the City's boundaries from many years as recorded on an 1887 OS map. Vehicles entering from Warwick Road could continue to the right of the picture in to Eaton Road and then on to Park Road, all built as part of the City's expansion. It is thought the photograph might be posed for some reason as the vehicles carry the Daimler marque. One vehicle has a registration plate showing with the letters DU which was one of the first letter combinations allocated to Coventry registered vehicles, others being HP, KV, RW, VC, WK. Registration of road vehicles in Great Britain commenced in 1903 and was operational from January 1904. Today trade plates can be seen with the letters DU used by transport companies delivering cars throughout the country.
