British Railways built 4-6-0 5MT No 44716 is seen pulling
out with a Birmingham-bound train consisting of ex-Southern Railway stock, a
notable rarity at Coventry. The photograph was taken on the 3rd September 1960
and shows one of the standard six-coach suburban sets stabled in up siding No
1. This was because the goods yard often had to be used to stable coaches
because the carriage sidings beside the Leamington branch were really quite
inadequate. This was despite the original single carriage siding had been
increased to four sidings by 1920, installed during the doubling of the
Leamington line, and a further £4,492 was spent on adding additional
carriage siding accommodation by December 1929.
