An LMS Schematic diagram showing Coventry No 2 Signal Cabin's track layout of the parcel dock and goods sidings

An LMS Schematic diagram showing Coventry No 2 Signal Cabin's track layout of the parcel dock and goods sidings. It was a peculiarity of the signalling at Coventry that although No 2 Cabin controlled the signals at No 1 Cabin, allowing down direction trains to enter the station, the reverse did not apply. On the down side, there was not one running signal that No 2 Cabin had sole control over. 1/4 and 2/5 were slots on No 1 Cabin's signals. Signals 3 and 6 were the down direction home signals for No 2 Cabin, but they were also controlled from No 3 Signal Cabin. The LNWR was always very frugal in the provision of shunt signals, and it is notable that there were none at all controlling movements to or from the parcels dock sidings over points 14 and 13. The layout here was worked solely on verbal instructions, and was, in any event, very crowded, which made the working that much more difficult. To make use of more than half the length of the platform in the parcels dock, it was necessary to work vehicles into the headshunt adjacent to No 13 points. Space was similarly limited on the down side, and there had not been sufficient room in front of the 'MR Shed' for a full trap point, so a scotch block (worked from the signal box by lever 9) swinging over the rail had to suffice.
