Coventry No 2 Signal Cabin, often called the 'Bell Box' which worked the connections at the west end of the station on 27th June 1959. It was called the 'Bell Box' after the large bell which hung on the front corner (to the left of the door in this view). The Bell remained in place, together with the cabin, up to the time it was demolished. This had been rung using a handle inside the box, to advise station staff of the impending arrival of passenger trains, but as the station 'migrated' eastwards towards Rugby, it could not be heard to clearly. Although it remained in situ, it was replaced by another bell mounted on the wall of the up platform, below the coping stones (about halfway along the platform) and worked by wire from a lever in Coventry No 1 Signal Cabin. As can be seen, the signalman at Coventry No 2 Signal Cabin had a very restricted view under the bridge towards Birmingham, and no track circuits to remind him of the position of trains out there. Because of this, train crews here were usually very quick about complying with Rule 55.
