British Railways built 5MT 4-6-0 No 44716 stands at Platform 2 at the head of a down express service to Birmingham New Street. Built in November 1948 so strictly speaking it was not an LMS locomotive No 44716 was an Ivatt adaptation of Stanier's superb design the most obvious external sign being the position of the water injectors which are positioned immediately behind the smokebox whereas originally they were just in front of the firebox. Built at Horwich works No 44716 remained in service until July 1965 when it was officially withdrawn from Crewe South shed to be scrapped in September 1965 at Bird's of Long Marston.
