Ex-LMS 4-6-2 8P Coronation Scot class No 46257 'City of Salford' is seen at the head of an up Birmingham to Euston express service during the later stages of reconstruction. Built as an Ivatt upgrade of Stanier's classic Pacific locomotive No 46257 was built at Crewe works on May 1948 some five months after the demise of the LMS. A number of modifications were made reflecting the need to introduce economy and labour saving measures including a self-cleaning smokebox, rocking fire grates and roller bearings. Many of these modifications were copied from the US locomotives that had been introduced during the war prior to their transportation to Europe after the invasion. The easiest method of identifying the two Ivatt modified engines was by looking at the side sheets on the cab which were square cut and just below the running plate. Number 46257 was withdrawn in September 1964 from Kingmoor shed at Carlisle and scrapped during December 1964 by Arnott & Young - West of Scotland Shipbreaking Company of Troon.
