In 1904-5 some forty-five of FW Webb's '17 inch Coal Engines' were converted from tender locomotives to tank engines for shunting purposes. Because of the box-like tank on top of the boiler they were known as 'square saddle tanks' although on the Great Western Railway this design would be described as a Pannier Tank.
