LNWR 0-6-2T 'Coal Tank' No 243 is seen standing at the West end of the down face of Platform 2 at the head of a local passenger service

LNWR 0-6-2T 'Coal Tank' No 243 is seen standing at the West end of the down face of Platform 2 at the head of a local passenger service prior to the strengthening of the roof in 1905. The locomotive is standing under the junction between Cowper and Paxton's roofs join and the temporary steel and timber supports indicate that there is a problem associated with the deterioration of the girder and steel latticework. Built at Crewe works in November 1881 No 243 was later renumbered by the LMS as No 7587 and as such it survived until September 1932 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped by Crewe works.
