Ex-LNWR 4P 4-6-0 Prince of Wales class No 25673 'Lusitania' is seen standing at the West end of Platform 2 at the head of a down express service to Manchester London Road via Stoke-on-Trent circa 1939. Built by Crewe works as LNWR No 1100 in March 1916 No 25673 was initially renumbered by the LMS as No 5673 in November 1927 but as with many LNWR locomotives was placed in the duplicate list by adding 20000 to the number. The duplicate list being created to provide the LMS' new 4-6-0 classes of Patriots, Jubilees and Black Fives with sequential numbering. This colour photograph shows No 25673 ten years before it was withdrawn in January 1949 from Stafford shed to be scrapped the following month by Crewe works. If the Second World War had not occurred then it was most likely that the locomotive would have been scrapped within the next year or two.
