Ex-LMS 3P 2-6-2T No 40118 is seen shunting vans whilst on pilot duties at New Street circa 1957. At first glance the 3E Monument Lane allocated Stanier locomotive seems to be displaying Class A passenger headlamps, but the reality is that one has a white aspect and the other red, as it operates as station pilot on the LNWR side of New Street station between Platforms 3 & 4. Built as LMS No 118 by Derby works in August 1935, it was renumbered as No 40118 by BR in February 1949 which it carried until August 1961 when it was withdrawn from 24L Carnforth shed.
