Ex-LMS 4-6-0 5XP 'Jubilee Class' No 45709 'Implacable' is seen on a southbound service at New Street in 1957. Built as LMS No 5709 in June 1936, this Stanier designed class of locomotives had a few problems which required a redraughting of the boiler. The issue being that Stanier's experience on the GWR was based on a lower level of superheating compared to LMS locomotives as well as the GWR locomotives being brought up on a diet of soft Welsh coal. The locomotive was renumbered by British Railways in January 1949 which it carried until November 1963 when it was withdrawn from 5A Crewe North shed to be scrapped by J Cashmores of Great Bridge.
