Ex-LMS 5XP 4-6-0 Rebuilt Patriot class No 45540 'Sir Robert Turnball' is seen about to pass under Hill Street bridge with a Wolverhampton express on 18th February 1950. This was another of the 'paper' rebuilds of LNWR Claughton class locomotives with No 45540 being re-built at Crewe works in August 1933 to carry the name 'Sir Robert Turnball from the outset. In November 1947, following its parallel boiler being condemned, No 45540 was rebuilt with a 2A tapered boiler and Stanier cab with the further modification in the early 1950s of smoke deflectors being fitted. It was in this, its final form, that No 45540 remained until May 1963 when it was withdrawn from Upperby shed in Carlisle to be scrapped in July 1963 by Crewe works.
