A late 19th century view of Birdingbury station showing LNWR slotted semaphore signals on the right adjacent to the goods yard. The signals are 'lower quadrant' meaning that danger is indicated by a horizontal position (9 º'Clock position) whereas 'Clear' or safe, is indicated by the arm being lowered to a 7 º'Clock position, as seen above. In later years most, but not all - GWR being an example - railway companies installed upper quadrant signals where the semaphore arm moved from the horizontal position, which was still indicating' danger', upwards to a position equivalent to 11 º'Clock on a clock face.
