Birmingham New Street - Southern Approaches: lnwrbhm_sa431a

Close up showing one of Curzon Street's signal box which controlled the lines entering the goods yard from Proof House Junction and a number of buildings in the yard

Close up of image 'lnwrbhm_sa431' showing Curzon Street No 1 signal cabin which controlled the lines entering the goods yard from Proof House Junction and a number of buildings in the yard used as both offices and mess facilities. When Curzon Street No 1 signal cabin was built the building on the left in this photograph was two floors high and impeded the view of the signalmen. This issue was resolved by the simple process of carefully removing the building's roof demolishing the upper floor and then rebuilding the roof. The 'engine house' built by the L&B at Curzon Street remained in place for a barely five years after the opening of New Street station and was located to the left of the signal box seen above. Curzon Street shed was the responsibility of the 'Southern' Division of the LNWR (the former L&B) whilst the Northern Division (the former GJR) was responsible for New Street station.
