Birmingham New Street - Southern Approaches: lnwrbhm_sa2320b

Close up showing Grand Junction signal cabin, part of Exchange Sidings and and the works of Wrights Ropes Ltd

Close up of image 'lnwrbhm_sa2320' showing Grand Junction signal cabin, part of Exchange Sidings and and the works of Wrights Ropes Ltd. The close proximity of the goods depots of both the former Midland Railway (MR) and London & North Western Railway together with the junction connecting the MR's lines from Derby and Gloucester with those of the former LNWR meant that this was an ideal location to build an exchange siding to assist in transferring goods between the two companies. The Exchange Sidings location adjacent to Wright Ropes also proved useful for some of its special orders as can be seen in image 'lnwrcs2125'. To the right of the Signal Cabin is the concreted in stop block which acted as the headshunt for Banbury Street yard which lay to the right, and behind, the photographer.
