Aston Shed: lnwra2305a

Close up showing the entrance road to Aston shed which was adjacent to Aston No 1 signal cabin

Close up of image 'lnwra2305' showing the entrance road to Aston shed which was adjacent to Aston No 1 signal cabin. Aston shed was almost completely closed from 6th January to 8th February 1961 when Aston No 1 signal cabin was closed due to a fire preventing it from controlling movements to and from the yard. The circular discs on the right by the bridge abutment would control locomotives reversing from the down line back to the shed. The sign showing '20' with an arrow beneath is a displaying speed restriction of 20 miles per hour for trains taking the Stechford line. Its a Saturday and in all probability the men seen above have just finished for the week and are taking a short cut along the track to Lichfield Road. Such casual behaviour was rife since the beginning of railways but since the demise of steam Health & Safety has risen considerably in importance.
