Looking towards Witton and Walsall with the bridge carrying the railway over Lichfield Road in the foreground on 15th April 1961. The photographer, DJ Norton, obviously had a very good relationship with the signalman and station staff by being allowed to stand on the track. At the Birmingham end of the down (left hand) platform the tower accommodating the hydraulic lift is seen. This lift was primarily used by porters for luggage and parcel traffic and was accessed at road level, sited behind the booking office as seen in image 'lnwra2301'. Passengers were expected to access the down platform via steps direct from the booking office whilst passengers requiring access to the up platform would need to use a subway under the railway before climbing the steps to the platform. The bridge in the foreground was re-built in 1906.
