Ex-LNWR 2F 0-6-0 '18in Goods' No 8482 is seen being prepared ready for another working day circa 1934. Built in April 1899 it remained in service until just prior to nationalisation when it was withdrawn in August 1947 being scrapped by Crewe works. The engines of this class of locomotive were known officially as 5ft 0in Express Goods but colloquially they were known as 'Cauliflowers' because from a distance the LNWR Coat of Arms could look like the vegetable. When the 18in Goods class was first introduced they carried the LNWR Coat of Arms on the middle splasher. Within a short period of the time the nickname was extended to the locomotive. They were also known to some enginemen as 'Crested Goods' for the same reason. Designed by Francis Webb, a total of three hundred and ten locomotives were built between 1880 and 1902 when Webb retired.
