Ex-LNWR 4P 4-6-0 Prince of Wales class locomotive No 25627 'Lewis Carrol' is seen approaching Tamworth station at the head of a down parcels train circa 1935. Built at Crewe works in January 1914 as LNWR No 146 it was renumbered in May 1927 as No 5627 and then again in the early 1930s when the LMS placed it on the duplicate list by adding 20000 to the number. The duplicate list freed up running numbers in the 5000 plus range for Fowler's Patriots and Stanier's Black 5 and Jubilee classes. As No 25627 it remained in service until July 1936 when it was retired from service for scrapping by Crewe works.
