LNWR 5XP 4-6-0 Claughton class No 2035 'Private E Sykes VC' stands at the up platform at the head of a semi-fast express to Euston circa 1922 . Part of the Midland Railway's High Level down platform on the Derby to Birmingham New Street route can be seen above the locomotive. The Midland had its up and down lines configured in the direction of Derby not London reflecting its early years as a regional railway company. The up being towards Derby whilst the down is towards Birmingham. Built at Crewe works in March 1920 No 2035 was later renumbered by the LMS in January 1927 as No 5976 and as such remained in service until February 1935 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped by Crewe works.
