Building the last Main Line Railway

Great Central Bridge and Viaduct: gcrcs66

The men above are riviting the steel sheeting to the base of the Great Central Railway bridge over the LNWR at Rugby. The small brazier would be used to heat up the rivets prior to their being hammered into through the steel sheeting and into pre-cut holes in the steel girders. The crane at the far end and other photigraphs suggest that this work was carried prior to the rest of the railway being built adjacent to this structure. C1896
