Newton to the Oxford Canal: gcrcs2a

Close up showing some of the heavy baulk timber framing used to support the new bridge's steel beams

Close up of image 'gcrcs2' showing some of the heavy baulk timber framing used to support the new bridge's steel beams. On the right is a large derrick, which is a type of crane, one of two located on this temporary bridge. Hand operated, its purpose was to assist in handling the large and heavy baulks of timber used for the temporary structure, then the material being used to build the abutments, finally followed by the steel plating used to build the steel beams in situ.
