Building the last Main Line Railway
Catesby Tunnel and Viaduct: gcrcs190
A wonderful close-up of the headgear and loading wharf at
tunnel no. 6, one of many shafts that were bored during the building of Catesby
tunnel. The timber scaffold, which has been somewhat haphazardly clad in wooden
planks, is surrounded by some of the thirty million bricks that are estimated
to have been used for the tunnel's construction.
The picture is a fine illustration of the significant
impact that tunnel construction brought to the landscape both above, and
beneath the surface. Note the pile of bricks that are being used to support a
section of contractor's railway.
