Building the last Main Line Railway

Newton to the Oxford Canal: gcrcs168

Bridge 439, the large brick arch overbridge which was built to carry Newton Lane across the Great Central's London Extension. The road entered Newton village itself just a short distance to the south of this point. Sitting on the line of undulating contractor's railway are a line of wagons bearing the name Topham, Jones & Railton: this was the firm responsible for building this section of the Last Main Line (Contract No.3, Aylestone to Rugby).
