Building the last Main Line Railway

Newton to the Oxford Canal: gcrcs167

This photograph was taken looking south towards the construction of bridge 448, a four span girder viaduct that carried the GC's Main Line across the Oxford Canal north of Rugby. On the left of the picture is the wing wall of the Great Central's brick arch bridge (446) over the River Avon. Thomas Oliver & Son was the firm responsible for building this section of the line (Contract No.4, Rugby to Woodford).
