Building the last Main Line Railway
Catesby Tunnel and Viaduct: gcrcs165
Looking down from a spoil heap towards a circular timber
shaft formwork. This would have been used to provide the shape of the brick
lined air shafts which were sunk along the length of Catesby tunnel.
At the top of the picture are a number of laden Griff coal
wagons: the Nuneaton coal mine was clearly providing the coal required for the
steam locomotives, shovels ane pumps used on the tunnel's construction.
