Building the last Main Line Railway
Catesby Tunnel and Viaduct: gcrcs153
A line of the contractor's temporary railway enters what is
thought to be the south portal of the Great Central's 3000 yard tunnel at
Catesby, Northamptonshire. Despite the apparent chaos of a roughly hewn cutting
littered with a mass of debris and materials, the curved wing walls and facade
are nearing completion. Note the jib of a steam powered crane in the top right
of the picture.
