Building the last Main Line Railway
Newton to the Oxford Canal: gcrcs143
View of one of the completed skewed brick piers used to
carry the steel girders over the Oxford Canal. The method of building in situ
the steel girders can be seen above. Large steel plating running the length of
the girder has been erected vertically with narrower horizontal plates riveted
at the top and bottom. This forms the basic 'I' shape with smaller sections
inserted at regular distances on both sides of the vertical plate to support
the top and bottom plating. Lying in the foreground are the boarded wooden
bridge centerings that have been used to provide the shape of the arches.
