Building the last Main Line Railway
Newton to the Oxford Canal: gcrcs140
A further view of two of the massive brick piers which
formed part of the approach to the Great Central viaduct to the north of the
Oxford Canal. Further along the embankment is the brick arch bridge that
carried the London Extension across the River Avon. At the centre of the
picture is a temporary wooden shelter. Part of the structure has been built to
house a steam powered pumping engine, the chimney of which can be seen
protruding from the roof.
