Building the last Main Line Railway
Flecknoe, Willoughby and Staverton: gcrcs123
Thought to have been taken near Staverton Road,
Warwickshire, a team of navvies take a momentary break from their work and pose
for Newton's camera. Using small wooden tubs being drawn by horses along a
muddy narrow gauge track, these men are removing turf. This was the first stage
of building the line, after this process the contractor's standard gauge would
be laid either to assist in the removal of spoil in a cutting or to transport
the spoil to an embankment.
