No 2 and the steps of the passenger footbridge erected at the time of the
rebuilding of the station. Footbridges were frequently built with protection to
both the sides and the roof reflecting the fact that 19th century passengers
from stations such as Widney Manor were affluent. This attitude towards
affluent passengers was in stark contrast to the railway companies' attitude to
staff when locomotive crews rode on the footplate with little protection. The
first part of the 20th century saw a change in attitude where the costs of
providing such protection outweighed the railway companies' attitude to
passenger comfort.
