Looking towards Birmingham showing the up platform on the left and the new steel framed covered passenger footbridge just beyond the buildings. The signs to the station's main building on the left read, from left to right, 'Gentlemen', 'Ladies Waiting Room' and 'Booking Office Waiting Room'. The gentlemen's toilets were accessed from a screened door in the side of the building, as was the case with the down platform. The GWR, in common with many other railway companies up to the outbreak of the First World War, provided ladies and young accompanied children with their own waiting rooms at most of its stations. This chivalrous attitude reflected the Victorian and Edwardian attitude to the fairer sex where it was thought essential to protect ladies from potential unwanted attentions of men.
