GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Warwick Station: gwrw370
Close up of image 'gwrw370' showing the length of the mixed
freight train which been set back to allow faster traffic to pass. Refuge
sidings were installed at a number of locations along the main line. Whilst
Leamington had a passing goods loop Southam & Long Itchington were equipped
with refuge sidings. A refuge siding typically had only one entrance or exit,
that being at the furthest point in the direction of travel. Therefore all the
refuge sidings on the up line were at the London end of the siding whilst those
on the down line were at the Birmingham end of the siding. The reason being was
that they were all fitted with trailing points which was much safer than facing
points, the latter being susceptible of being split by a bogie wheel at speed
and derailing the train.
