GWR Route: The North Warwickshire Line
GWR Route: Stratford on Avon to Hatton
Stratford on Avon Shed: gwrsa614
View of the single road leading to Stratford on Avon's
two-road shed after passing the coaling and watering facilities. The coal
wagons were propelled up an incline of sufficient height to allow them to be
unloaded by hand into small tubs which in turn would be pushed out on to a
cantilevered ramp for the coal to drop into the tender or bunker of the
locomotive. Above the wagon was a roof to provide the labourers with some
respite from inclement weather whilst above the coaling house was the water
tank required to provide adequate supplies of water for the shed and station.
The shed was built in 1908 as part of the GWR's strategy to upgrade the
facilities along the line of its new West of England route. The two-road shed
was located to the north of the station and had basic coaling facilities.
