GWR Route: The North Warwickshire Line
Stratford upon Avon Station: gwrsa494
Looking south from the Birmingham end of the station towards
Honeybourne. Stratford's livestock market was held immediately next to the
station, on the left in this photograph, and is recorded in Vic Mitchell and
Keith Smith's book entitled 'Stratford Upon Avon to Cheltenham' as having the
name 'Smithfield'.
The market was an important source of income for the
railways because the livestock would often be brought in to the market from out
lying areas as well as transporting the sold livestock to the various abbatoirs
across the region. In this photograph a number of cattle vans or horss boxes
are standing the other side of the fence.
