This close up of image 'gwrm589' was included to show a curious feature, namely the opening below the original station's platform. This type of aperture was normally associated when a signal box or ground frame was located at the rear of a platform with the rodding exiting via the opening. It is obviously not related to the 1891 signal box so it begs the question as to whether there was an earlier signal box here, or more likely, a ground frame.
