John Copsey writes 'There is evidence that it started its life (the up bay) as part of the 'excursion' side of the station after the initial building work, providing part of a platform for down mixed-gauge services'. During the early years of the station when broad gauge and narrow gauge operated the lines under the train shed were broad gauge and it was the 'excursion' platform that handled the initial and low levels of narrow gauge traffic, mainly from Stratford upon Avon.
