This close up of image 'gwrls850' shows the Birmingham end of the down platform including the water column and goods shed. The water column has a metal ladder fixed permanently from the platform to the top to enable staff to inspect the tank, a situation the Health & Safety culture would not permit today. The bracket fixed to the column supported the water crane which could be swung out to the locomotive. The goods shed is an original 1853 structure albeit modified since building and had just a few years left before it would be demolished to make way for the bay and other lines.
