Close up showing the central portion of the up platform and the ad-hoc timber windscreen erected on the columns

The use of 48 columns on a platform of 270 feet long meant that they were very closely spaced with about 5 feet between the column faces. This rather inhibited the movement of passengers and luggage carts. The refreshment room was to the extreme left of this photograph with waiting rooms between it and the main entrance, which was behind the ad-hoc windscreen built from timber boarding and fixed to the columns. It is thought that the boarding was an attempt to reduce the wind and inclement weather that would blow through the opening from the platform through to the forecourt or vice versa. Photographs also show that similar boarding was fixed on the columns to the up platform.
