This close up of image 'gwrls850' shows the glass cupola which provided natural lighting to the subway at the junction of the stairs to the down platform. The window in the side of the platform structure was also located to provide natural light to the staircase itself whilst the metal railings and handrail can be seen to the right marking the point where the staircase arrived at the platform. The light fixed to the end column was lit by gas which was perpetuated in the new building at the insistence of the local gas company who were major clients of the GWR.
