GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Leamington Spa Station: gwrls223a
This close up of image 'gwrls23' shows the original passenger
subway which accessed Leamington station's up platform and which was later
extended to the the LNWR station. The new retaining wall to the left of the
subway entrance was built without the massive temporary works normally
associated with building retaining walls. This was because the original 1853
structure had massive timber piles driven down under each of the train shed's
columns. Being at approximately six foot centres they were perfect for
retaining the earth during the excavation to form the retaining wall to the
rear of the new building. A speed restriction would have been in place to
minimise possible earth movements during this period.
