GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Leamington Spa - New Station: gwrls221a
Close up of image 'gwrls221' which shows the original
station's ladies waiting room. The demolished area adjacent to the ladies
waiting room was the booking office and hall. The footings are of interest
because the Leamington Year Book of 1853 states that because the railway being
on an embankment the station was built on well-seasoned Memel timber gigantic
piles.
It must be assumed that whilst the description was applied
to the station accommodation it was only applicable to the train shed. The use
of an inner foundation wall is of interest because the structure itself does
not warrant it. It is possible that it was cellars and the inner wall was an
elaborate form of 'dry lining' used to keep the dampness of the ground at
bay.
