The new station buildings being built in conjunction with the old being demolished

As illustrated by this view, the new station buildings were built in conjunction with demolishing the old station. As can be seen the foundations of the old station were at a higher level than than the new building. The need to provide a larger forecourt in the 1930s compared to the 1850s reflected the increase in road traffic and the need to accommodate car parking.
