GWR 4-6-0 No 4971 'Stanway Hall' stands at the head of a down express

GWR 4-6-0 No 4971 'Stanway Hall' stands at the head of a down express. The footbridge is now open being without the side sheeting seen in earlier photographs which would have been a schoolboys dream allowing them to stand above enjoying the locomotive's exhaust circa 1936. Number 4971 was built by Swindon works to Lot 254 in January 1930 and served in service for thirty-two years before withdrawn from Canton shed in Cardiff in August 1962 but was in store for over a year before being scrapped by R Hayes of Bridgend in January 1964.
